I just wanted to share some thoughts on something that’s really important in our walk with Christ and in our everyday lives: discernment. This topic is close to my heart because I’ve experienced firsthand the highs and lows that come with making decisions, especially in business, and I want to help others avoid some of the pitfalls I've encountered.

The Bible has a lot to say about discernment. Proverbs 3:5-6 is a go-to verse for many of us: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." This scripture reminds us that real wisdom comes from trusting God and not just relying on our own smarts.

James 1:5 is another great verse: "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you." It’s comforting to know that when we ask God for wisdom, He’s more than willing to give it to us.

Let me share a story with you. In my business journey, I’ve learned some tough lessons about the importance of discernment. There was a time when I trusted people who seemed smart and well-intentioned. Unfortunately, that trust led me to significant financial loss, emotional stress and years of picking up the pieces.

I remember one particular project where I partnered with someone based on their impressive credentials and persuasive promises. I ignored the subtle red flags and, trusting them (and myself), plunged ahead. As time progressed, it became clear that their values didn’t match mine, and their actions were more about personal gain than mutual success, but by then, it was too late.

The fallout was severe. I felt betrayed and disillusioned. In hindsight, I realized I had put my trust in people rather than in God, who is the only truly trustworthy one.

Those painful experiences taught me a lot about discernment and the importance of seeking God’s guidance in every decision. Jeremiah 17:9 says, "The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?" It’s a humbling reminder that our judgment can be flawed and that we need God’s wisdom.

Since then, I’ve made it a priority to seek God’s direction in my business and personal life. I pray for discernment, evaluate potential partners carefully, and trust that God will guide me to people who share my values. Leaning on His understanding has brought me greater peace of mind.

Here are a few things I learned that might help you as you seek discernment in your own lives:

• Make it a habit to pray for discernment. Ask God to reveal His will and give you clarity.

• Regularly read the Word. It’s full of wisdom that can help you develop discernment.

• Surround yourself with wise, godly people who can offer advice and perspective. Proverbs 15:22 says, "Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed."

• Take the time to assess the character of those you’re considering partnering with. Trust your instincts and look for red flags.

• Sometimes the best decision is to wait. Don’t rush into things. Trust that God’s timing is perfect.

By trusting in God’s wisdom and seeking His guidance, we can avoid the pitfalls of misplaced trust and make decisions that honor Him. Remember, God is the only truly trustworthy one. When we lean on Him, He will direct our paths and lead us to success. I hope these insights help you avoid some of the mistakes I’ve made and encourage you to seek God’s wisdom in all your decisions.
